Hey folks. Last year I alluded to big plans for this newsletter, so I owe you an update.
I started The Great Near because I wanted someone to explain to me (like really explain) what “reimagining the economy” looks like? Who are the leaders testing models that prioritize people over corporate profits? Underneath stale critiques of neoliberalism and capitalism, who are the real culprits of economic injustice? Truthfully, we barely scratched the surface.
Most of us are painfully aware that something’s not working. Truisms about inequality are so commonplace that we simply tune them out. And despite the best intentions of individuals working tirelessly to close the wealth gap, the net worth of billionaires ballooned from $8 trillion to $13.1 trillion last year.
TGN came into existence because there is hunger and excitement for solutions; those that can transition and guide us towards an economy that allows more people, specifically people of color, to participate. Demand to figure out these solutions has grown into the millions.
Back to the update. Somewhere in the process of scheming for “TGN V2,” an opportunity arose to transition into a role that would allow me to do something I love: build. It’s why I loved building this newsletter (though writing in public occasionally filled me with dread) and frankly why I joined Common Future in the first place. I’ve since joined Common Future’s Office of the CEO as Director of Special Projects and couldn’t be more excited.
So what does that mean for The Great Near?
Well, we’re taking a break. Though I won’t be regularly writing this newsletter 😓, it’s not going to disappear. I hope you stick around as we figure this out. Do you know a journalist passionate about new economic models? An exceptional writer who needs a platform? Drop me a note: caitlin@commonfuture.co
until soon,
caitlin
Congratulations on the new, well-deserved role, Caitlin! Our team will miss TGN updates, especially those with hand-drawn diagrams.
